Credentials of Authors and Outside Evaluation of TMM

Classical Conversations on Multimedia, Inc. (CCMM) is committed to creating quality curricular materials designed for use by classical Christian homeschool parents. Drawing upon combined decades of experience with the classical model and upon the knowledge of subject matter experts, CCMM ensures that curricular materials align with the established canon of each strand while doing so in a way that equips parents to teach their children the skills of learning embodied in the arts of grammar, dialectic c, and rhetoric.

The primary author of The Math Map is Leigh Bortins, an accomplished author and academic who draws upon decades as an acknowledged leader in the classical education movement as well as upon her personal background as an aeronautical engineer. Leigh has decades of experience leading the math conversation in her own homeschool and in Classical Conversations as a tutor. Dr. Kirsty Gilpin has worked alongside Leigh since the inception of The Math Map and brings an academic background that includes an undergraduate degree in math and computer sciences, a master’s degree in secondary math education, and a Ph.D. in curriculum and instruction with an emphasis on mathematics. Additionally, Kirsty has several years of experience teaching math in traditional classrooms as well as two decades of experience with the classical model, teaching mathematics in her own homeschool, as a tutor in Classical Conversations communities, and as a university professor.

Together Leigh and Kirsty have consulted US national standards along with international standards and classical mathematical texts to ensure that The Math Map presents a unified view of mathematics. They have wrestled with the largest and smallest details of mathematics and math education to ensure that The Math Map consistently communicates mathematical concepts throughout each year and across the levels.

Editors with broad mathematical experience have repeatedly reviewed the curriculum in the pursuit of excellence. These editors include former classroom teachers as well as civil and mechanical engineers with decades of experience applying mathematical principles to solve complex problems. Together, The Math Map editors have well over a century of experience teaching mathematics in traditional and homeschool settings, in Classical Conversations communities, and as tutors to students at every level and from all educational backgrounds.

The Math Map is designed to equip parents who desire to teach math classically and through a Biblical lens. The Math Map arranges the curriculum to align with the underlying dimensional arrangement of mathematics so that families are able to see the big picture of mathematics and to dive into details of each topic as they build their memoria and understanding through the canons of rhetoric, the common topics, and the core habits. By utilizing the skill of learning, all students have access to the great ideas of mathematics. The math itself is ageless and fluency in the language of mathematics continues to require consistent and regular engagement with mathematics over time.
