1.  What is The Math Map: Fractions?

The Math Map is a classical Christian math curriculum developed by Leigh Bortins and Classical Conversations that has a 13-year sequence and a 30-week scope. The Math Map is designed to help families seek God through mathematics while equipping students for all levels of future math studies. Organized by dimension, students are introduced to the grammar of arithmetic, geometry, and algebra, given the opportunity to practice skills through the dialectic of problem-solving, and encouraged to become rhetorical in key foundational concepts of mathematics.

The Math Map: Fractions is the level of The Math Map that uses rational numbers expressed in fractional form for calculations. The Fractions domain correlates to ages 9+.


2.  What does The Math Map: Fractions look like?

The Math Map: Fractions is a set of 30 booklets that represent 30 lessons to be completed over 30 weeks. Each booklet is designed to be self-contained, with lesson pages, reference charts, and solutions included. The booklets are 3-hole punched for ease of organizing in binders. The Math Map: Fractions is sold as a shrink-wrapped set with individual booklets available for purchase to download if a replacement of a single booklet is needed.

The Math Map: Fractions is designed for use by students 9+ and their families in the Foundations program. Older students may use The Math Map: Fractions when a review of operations on Fractions is needed.

The Math Map: Fractions is designed to be used one booklet per week and will take 30 weeks to complete. Parents may use the materials to provide additional practice and review beyond the 30-week time period if desired.

Yes, The Math Map: Fractions is designed to be completed within 30 weeks, or one academic year.

10.  Do families need any additional supplies to use the resource?

The booklets of The Math Map: Fractions are designed to be self-contained, including an exordium, reference charts, and solutions. Purchasing flashcards to use with The Math Map: Fractions will help families be most successful. Families have access to an online resource, The Math Map Companion, through CC Connected.


11.  May siblings share the resource?

Though designed to be consumable, families may share The Math Map: Fractions booklets by doing all work on separate paper or by using sheet protectors. Materials may not be duplicated for use with additional students.

Students atdifferent levels should use the domain most appropriate to their level. Pagesare laid out across domains so that siblings will work with similar exercisesusing different domains.


12.  Is the resource consumable?

The Math Map: Fractions is designed to be consumable, though families may choose not to write in the booklets, thus allowing them to be reused.


13.  Is there any difficult or dark subject matter?

The Math Map seeks to provide a hospitable invitation to the math conversation using art and a clear mapping of the subject to overcome any possible or previous reluctance by parents to lead math education in their homes.


14.  What has changed from the previous edition?

This is the first edition of The Math Map: Fractions.


15.  Does this replace another product or resource?

The Math Map: Fractions replaces the recommendation for Foundations families to use Saxon math curricula.


16.  How is this product used in community?

The Math Map: Fractions is recommended for families to prepare for The Math Map: Complex used in the logic strand in Challenge A. Students will use The Math Map: Fractions at home. When the full rollout of The Math Map is complete, all students will have access to an appropriate domain of The Math Map and communities will be able to share in a common math conversation.


17.  When will the product be available? (internal)

The Math Map: Fractions is scheduled to be available in the bookstore beginning April 1st, 2025.


18.  Will this product be available for pre-order? (internal)

No. There are no plans to have a pre-order for The Math Map: Fractions.


19.  What languages is this product being released in?

English.


20.  Will it be available in other languages in the future?

The long-term goal is to have The Math Map: Fractions available in other languages, but there is no timeline yet.

No. The Math Map: Fractions is recommended for families who wish to participate in the wider community math conversation and to prepare for The Math Map: Complex, a required resource in Challenge A.


22.  Will the previous edition continue to be available/usable?

This is the first edition.

This is the first edition.


24.  What sources were consulted for this resource?

The Math Map team developed the curriculum based on years of experience teaching mathematics with a wide range of curricular choices. References such as Wolfram Math World were used to determine preferred notation when multiple options were available.


25.  Does this resource contain religious material?

The purpose of the curriculum is to help families to discover God through mathematics. Specifically, each booklet of The Math Map: Fractions has a piece of art, a quotation, and a reflection that come from a variety of sources, including the Bible. Each booklet contains an essay, “A Contribution to the Conversation,” which connects the topic of the booklet to the art, quotation, and reflection with the purpose of helping students and families help to see the spiritual connections in the topic. In The Math Map Companion, a series of essays called The Travelogue unites spiritual understanding with the examination of math dimensionality.


26.  If Scripture is used, which version of the Bible is used?

Currently, scripture references in The Math Map: Fractions and The Math Map Companion are in KJV, ESV, or NASB.


27.  If this resource is a new edition, will a comparison sheet be provided on the bookstore page?

This is the first edition, but errata from the first edition will be included with subsequent editions.


28.  Will there be a director or bulk order discount for this product? (internal)

No, there will be no director or group discounts on The Math Map: Fractions.


29.  Why is this product being used/added/replaced?

Due to the proprietary nature of Saxon Mathematics, Classical Conversations cannot provide support or training or create derivative products in support of the current materials. In 2017, Leigh Bortins began to develop a new curriculum based on Christian principles and classical methods of education that can be fully supported by Classical Conversations through additional materials and online resources.


30.  Is the product available to the public for purchase?

There are no restrictions on the purchase of The Math Map: Fractions. The curriculum is intended for use by families enrolled in Classical Conversations Communities, and only those families have access to support for the materials. This includes access to The Math Map Companion, which is only available to members of CC Connected who have paid their tuition for a CC Community.
